Research and application of hot repair materials for electric furnace bottoms

2025-08-12

What is hot repair material for electric furnace bottom?

Hot repair material for electric furnace bottom is formulated using high-quality high-iron, high-calcium, magnesia raw materials and a unique organic binder. It addresses the needs of hot filling the gap between the tuyere and the furnace bottom during steelmaking in an electric furnace when changing the tapping spout, as well as hot minor repairs for local pits or cracks in the electric furnace bottom. This series of products features low-temperature strength generation, high high-temperature strength, and resistance to scouring and erosion, making it an ideal material for hot repair of the electric furnace tapping spout and bottom.

Composition and characteristics of hot repair material for electric furnace bottom

Electric furnace melt pool, namely the furnace bottom and slope, uses alkaline refractory repair material with MgO-CaO-C composition. The raw materials use a composite carbon and ceramic bonding method, used for hot repair of the electric furnace bottom. It has advantages such as good fluidity, short sintering time, low dust pollution, and convenient construction.

Repair precautions for hot repair material for electric furnace bottom

The repair work of the electric furnace bottom is usually carried out after the electric furnace tapping. At this time, electric furnace bottom ramming material will be used. First, the ramming material is placed in the area that needs to be repaired using an overhead crane, and then leveled using tools. Before opening the furnace, the operating procedure for the first furnace of a new furnace must be followed.

Ensure the furnace bottom is in working condition
Before repairing the electric furnace bottom, ensure that all the molten steel slag in the furnace has been completely removed. Except for slag removal during the oxidation period, the remaining slag should be removed at once after tapping, or the slag should be poured into a dedicated ladle at the end of tapping.

Cleaning steel slag and operational points
The following are points to note before electric furnace repair: Reduce the amount of scrap steel added and avoid adding dolomite to ensure the repair effect; increase the tapping temperature to facilitate the fluidity of the slag, thus facilitating slag removal operations. While waiting for the ladle, keep the electric furnace energized for slag chemical reaction and heat preservation, and pay attention to extending the electrodes to prevent the electrodes from being too short to supply power.
